After weeks of speculation, sources close to Wyclef Jean have confirmed that the rapper/songwriter/producer will officially announce his bid for the Haitian presidency next Thursday, on August 5th. The 37-year-old was born in Haiti, but immigrated to the United States at the age of nine, living in Brooklyn before finally settling in South Orange, New Jersey. The rapper’s love for his homeland has been well-documented for years, but has been especially visible since the January earthquake that devastated Port-Au-Prince. Since then, he’s worked diligently to raise money in Haiti and around the world for those still suffering on the island.
The rapper will make his official announcement just two days prior to the country?s August 7th deadline to submit his plan for running for President. “I think if Wyclef is allowed to run he will have a straight victory,” political leader and former presidential candidate Himmler Rebu told Reuters yesterday.
