I met Reason years ago through gigs, BBQ’s near the Obese Records store, and just generally being a young dude hanging around, wanting to be a part of the scene, though he probably wouldn’t remember. Over the years, and as my career has progressed, I have had a lot more interaction with Rea’, and though I was helped along by my own people, he has always been a great source of support, advice, and knowledge whenever I’ve needed it. I have also seen firsthand the support Reason has given a lot of young artists, close friends of mine included.

I think it comes from the selfless passion he has for the music, the culture behind it, and young people with a goal, that many claim but few possess. And beyond that, an ability to see qualities in others, and to nurture and encourage that potential; earlier this year I spoke, at Rea’s request, to about 250 year 9 students he teaches. One of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had through music, had very little to do with music, and everything to do with a bit of a push from Reason to step outside of my comfort zone. It’s a small, though insightful, example of the effect he’s had on me, and I’m sure there are many stories of a similar nature, spanning the more than 20 years of contribution Rea’s made.
When I heard that Window Of Time was to be his last release, I immediately hit him up saying that the scene, particularly Melbourne’s, would be that much weaker for his absence. There is much talk about kings and legends within the scene, but I don’t think there would be many brave enough to challenge the idea that Reason is a bona fide king. I wish the fella all the best for the future, and look forward to following in his footsteps to do my bit to improve the state of local hip-hop for those still to come. Peace brother, and congrats on an innings few will match.

Javier Colon, the first season winner of ‘The Voice’, performed songs from his debut album ‘Come Through For You’ on Walmart Soundcheck. The set list includes ‘Runnin’, ‘Happy Sinner’, ‘As Long As We Got Love’, ‘Raise Your Hand’, ‘Drop In The Ocean’ and ‘Stitch by Stitch’.

During an interview, Javier talked about his experience on the NBC reality singing competition, expecting the worst and hoping for the best after his history in the music business, getting picked by Adam Levine and the advice he got from the Maroon 5 frontman, the story behind ‘Stitch by Stitch’ and how it’s “my story”, the first single ‘As Long As We Got Love’, teaming with Natasha Bedingfield on the track, and more.

“Music was a part of our daily lives,” Javier said about his childhood. “Music was always on in the house. That’s kind of where it started, where I would kind of start mimicing the songs that I would hear on the radio. I would sing all day every day around our house, but when it came to singing elsewhere, I didn’t want any part of it. My mom would try to get me to sing at these different functions. I was like there’s no way I’m gonna sing anything for anybody. I didn’t have any confidence at all. She was like, ‘I’ll pay you $10 if you do.’ I was like, ‘Okay. Where do I gotta go?’”

”I’m So Proud of This Alliance”
1:30PM ET November 17th, 2011
Contributor : Stephen Willis
A Rocky Williform Company

On the heels of his joining Cash Money Records, rapper Busta Rhymes has announced a partnership with Google Music to exclusively release his new single “Why Stop Now” which also features Chris Brown. His new album, E.L.E. 2: End of the World, through the platform.

“The experience has been extremely refreshing. I’ve been recording music professionally for 20 years this year. We put out my first album in ’91 with my first group, called Leaders of the New School, so in 2011, 20 years later, the same routine absolutely becomes redundant,” he said. “When you have the opportunity to be a part of something (pauses) It’s always great to be a part of something new, but it’s a whole other different dynamic and anxiety when you’re a part of the new revolutionary, groundbreaking turning point and shift in a climate for the world. Like, this isn’t just for music, this is for the world. It’s a statement.”

“[B]eing part of something like that is a milestone, and a turning point for me in my career. It says so much in so many different dynamics. I’m so proud of this alliance and this union and just being a part of the most powerful search engine in existence, and the fact that they are making such a conscious effort to provide and facilitate a platform for artists that gives us the empowerment and the strength for being that much more independently driven. It just really does a lot for the faith of the future of the music, not just creatively, but professionally.”

Field Mob’s Shawn J is claiming that Ludacris sent a subliminal shot at his group on Ludacris’ new mixtape “1.21 Gigawatts.” On the song “Say It To My Face,” Shawn feels Luda went after Field Mob. He also reveals that there are monetary disputes with the Atlanta superstar.

“I’m pretty sure for a fact he’s talking about me on ‘Say It to My Face.’ That bullsh*t. It’s crazy because I did that. This sh*t don’t hold no weight,” he said. “Gotta look at it like, when you’re an artist and doing TV or whatever, I’ve been sitting at home before watching BET and seen ‘So What’ ringtone come up on Jamster commercials. And then we weren’t getting them checks. So it left a sour taste in my mouth. And then it had a whole thing transpire with us anyways.”

“One minute, we were cool as f*ck. I pretty much understood that that’s how DTP rocks. They use you for whatever. When Luda ain’t got no hit songs, they godd**n milk you for your sh*t and then move onto the next project. That’s exactly what they did. I feel like he a f**k n***a. That’s how I feel. I know they whole system, I’ve been around. I’ve seen how other artists got treated just like that. Some real f*ck n***a sh*t. So I called him a b*tch, a b*tch a** n***a.”

Beloved 80s-90s hip hop show “Yo! MTV Raps” will be returning in a new 30-minute special for MTV2. The show, “Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts,” will air on Sunday, December 4th at midnight. The program is a retrospective featuring former hosts Ed Lover, Dr. Dre, and Fab 5 Freddy, and artists like Busta Rhymes, Ice Cube, The Roots’ ?uestlove, Wiz Khalifa, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Fat Joe and DJ Premier.

“In this Classic Cuts special, people will go back to a seminal time in hip-hop which many have called the ‘Golden Era’ – resulting in records that are as meaningful today as they were back then,” Fab 5 Freddy said. “In order to appreciate how far hip-hop has come, you have to pay respect to the songs and artists that helped catapult the genre from a small community of fans to world domination.”

“It’s a great moment to be re-connected with Yo! and examine the music that had a role in introducing hip-hop to music lovers globally,” Ed Lover said.

Russell Simmons has voiced his support for Jay-Z and Rocawear’s new line of “Occupy All Streets” T-shirt. Critics blasted the fashion statement as an example of corporate greed trying to capitalize on a movement of the people. The Occupy Wall Street movement is passionately against corporate greed, hence the controversy.

But Simmons sees no conflict in Rocawear selling the shirts.

“What’s wrong with selling goodness? There’s nothing wrong with it,” Russell Simmons said. “Jay-Z didn’t make a T-shirt [that said] ‘F**k the Bums on the Street. He wrote a T-shirt ‘Occupy All Streets’ – I’m happy, it furthers the movement, it inspires the movement.”

“I’m going to get every corporation that wants to support us to get branding as part of the process,” Russell Sioms said. “No one’s against business. We’re against business having too much control over our government.”

”I Didn’t Even Know He Cared That Much”
6:00AM ET November 18th, 2011
Contributor : Stephen Willis
A Rocky Williform Company

Rapper Big Sean is addressing the buzz surrounding Ludacris’ “Badaboom” track, which supposedly disses Sean and fellow rap star Drake. Sean tried to downplay the dispute between he and Ludacris over who originated what Sean dubbed the ‘Supa Dupa’ flow.

“Ya’ll sure [the song] is about me? ‘Cause I didn’t hear no name or nothing, ” he said. “I ain’t got no problems with Luda, I never did. I think he’s referring to an interview I did over a year ago. Literally over a year ago. But in the interview I said he’s a legend. I respect people who is ahead of me. I respect OGs and the Gs in general. The only thing I said–[the interviewers] was telling me about the “Supa Dupa” flow. They call it the Supa Dupa flow because on Big Sean my second mixtape I had a flow on there where I was using one word to describe another word in a punchline form.”

“I feel like Drake made it more popular on the song ‘Forever.’ A lot of people thought Drake made that up and this was new, and Drake was like, ‘I could trace that back to Big Sean actually on his mixtape. That’s where I first heard it. I think that’s where a lot of emcees got it from,’” he continued. “That’s what Drake said. So people was telling me, ‘This is your flow.’ And I’m like, ‘Alright.’”

“I’m pretty sure it was done before [Luda] but I’m just saying where it came from now,” Sean added. “We talkin’ about now…I’m not trying to debate and say, ‘I was the first to do this ever.’ I’m just saying that’s just where it was between us. So [some interviewers] asked me, ‘What’s a good example of [the Supa Dupa flow] and what’s a bad example of it?’ And I think I said [Luda's] ‘balloons’ line. But I’m telling you this was over a year ago. I can’t believe this was something that’s been lingering this long…I don’t have no problems with Luda. I didn’t even know he cared that much, for a year, to be thinking about what I said in interviews…I think Luda is the best, I think he’s a legend.”
